I can’t, and I won’t!
Holy Spirit brought me to these lush green pastures. I’ve eaten my fill. I’ve drunk deeply from the cool, crystal-clear spring waters flowing through this oasis. And I have enjoyed refreshing, soul-restoring rest.
Why should I leave? I can’t and I won’t! Holy Spirit led me here and He’s not telling me to move on. And, by now, I know not to move away from His side. So let’s just stay right here as long as He wants us to be here.
He will guide us into a deeper revelation of the truth as we continue our quest to know the unknowable, the love of God… the love that is beyond love!
¹⁷ “Then, by constantly using your faith, the life of Christ will be released deep inside you, and the resting place of His love will become the very source and root of your life. ¹⁸ Then you will be empowered to discover what every holy one experiences—the great magnitude of the astonishing love of Christ in all its dimensions. How deeply intimate and far-reaching is His love! How enduring and inclusive it is! ¹⁹ Endless love beyond measurement that transcends our understanding—this extravagant love pours into you until you are filled to overflowing with the fullness of God!”
(Ephesians 3:17-19, Passion Translation)
The Father’s love is eternally unalterable. He loved us even while we were His enemies. But we could only realize and experience Abba’s love after Jesus destroyed sin’s power to separate us from Him. Jesus separated us from our sin. And now nothing can separate us from God’s love!
Have you ever noticed what Jesus said to Nicodemus in John 3:16? It was unusual. He spoke of God’s love and His gift of a Savior as being in the past tense:
“For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He [even] gave up His only begotten (unique) Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish (come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting) life.”
(John 3:16 Amplified Bible Classic Edition)
Why speak about God’s love in the past tense? It’s because God has always loved us and treasured us in His heart. His love for us was already an established eternal reality, even before the universe was created.
“The Lord has appeared of old to me saying: ‘Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you.” (Jeremiah 31:3)
The word translated as “everlasting” in this verse is the Hebrew word “olam”. Of course “olam” means, “eternal” or “forever”. But it also means “hidden” and “concealed, but being revealed”.
We are only beginning to know and experience the Father’s love. New vistas, new horizons, new panoramas, new perspectives, new attributes, new revelations, new graces, new gifts, and new aspects of His love, we’ve never known, or even imagined, will be revealed to us, in us, and through us, as we explore the width, length, height and depth, the infinite dimensions, of His love!
Throughout eternity there will be an ever unfolding revelation of God’s limitless love, mercy, and grace to us.
⁶ “He raised us up with Him and seated us in the heavenly realms with our beloved Jesus the Anointed, the Liberating King. ⁷He did this for a reason: so that for all eternity we will stand as a living testimony to the incredible riches of His grace and kindness that He freely gives to us by uniting us with Jesus the Anointed.”
(Ephesians 2:6-7, The Voice Translation)
But now, brothers and sisters, it’s time to honestly lay all the love-cards on the table…
His love is eternally perfect. Our love is not.
We live in an imperfect world, and so our love for Him, for ourselves and for others is imperfect also. We are harassed and pressured on every side by the crazy pace of our modern “life-style”.
Because of that, our awareness of His presence and love is often crowded out of our daily lives. It seems we are constantly being bombarded with new challenges, worries, temptations, anxieties, fears, and distractions.
Like sheep, that have become disoriented, confused, lost, and separated from their shepherd, we spend too much of our lives feeling abandoned, alone, and afraid.
But if we are listening carefully, we will hear our Good Shepherd calling us to realign our priorities, and reconnect with Him.
He urges us to”REMEMBER” (Revelation 2:5)
(Common English Bible) – ” So remember the high point from which you have fallen…”
(Expanded Bible) – “So remember where you were before you fell…”
In Part 1 of this series (posted 7/8/25) we learned that the word “remember” used in this verse, is the same Greek word used in the gospel accounts of Jesus commanding the Church to “remember” Him whenever we partake of communion.
It is the Greek word “mneme”, and is the source of the following English words: memorial, remembrance, commemoration, and monument.
(Now please pay attention to what is coming next, because Holy Spirit is starting to bring all of this together.)
Imagine for a moment that you are a tourist, enjoying your first visit to Washington, D.C. and you want to return to your hotel after a day of sight-seeing.
But you take a wrong turn, and then another. The streets all look the same, and you take yet another wrong turn. Now you’re really lost. Your frustration grows. Your anxiety level is rising. Soon you are thoroughly disoriented, confused, and lost.
You don’t have a cell phone or a GPS to help you get back on track, so what do you do?
Suddenly you remember that your hotel is only a half mile west of the Washington Monument. That monument is 555 feet tall, and can be seen from Shenandoah National Park, which is over 50 miles away. So it is the perfect landmark.
You lift your eyes and there it is… that great big beautiful monument! It easily towers above everything else around it. It can be seen from every direction. It’s presence dispels every doubt, reorients you, and helps guide you back home.
God’s forever-love gave us His Son! He is our living landmark, our eternal monument! His love towers above everything else! It can be seen from every direction, past, present, and forever-future!
Unlike every other monument, ours is not a memorial to the dead, but to the Risen Living Savior, the very essence and source of Eternal Life!
When we become disoriented, confused, and weary… when we have forgotten our Shepherd’s love… when our grip begins to slip…
We only need to remember God’s love for us in Christ’s death, burial, resurrection, and ascension to His throne at the Father’s right hand. All that He did was for us. All that He did was motivated by love!
Do you want to know where that monument commemorating God’s love is located? Just look in the mirror of God’s Word! It’s us! We are the eternal monument to His love. His love is totally invested in us! He has not called us to BUILD a dwelling place for His presence, but to BE a dwelling place for His awesome presence.
He is the Cornerstone. We are a living eternal monument in Him, with Him, and through Him… an eternal reminder of God’s love and faithfulness.
Remember Ephesians 2:7 – “for all eternity we will stand as a living testimony to the incredible riches of His grace… “
“And you are living stones that God is building into His spiritual temple…”
(1 Peter 2:5, New Living Translation)
We are an eternal dwelling place for our God’s glorious presence! Hallelujah! That is love!
