Proverbs 4:20-23 says, ²⁰ “My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. ²¹ Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; ²² For they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh. ²³ Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.”
The Hebrew word for “health” in verse 22 also means “medicine.” God’s Word is medicine to all our flesh. Leeser Translation of Exodus 15:26 reads, “I am the Lord, your Physician.” The medicine our Physician prescribes is His Word.
I’m in! How about you? No expensive visits to the pharmacy! No harmful side-effects! And 100% guaranteed to “get your motor runnin’ and fix what ails ya!”
A WORD OF CAUTION:
Many people make the mistake of substituting “belief” in healing for the actual taking of God’s medicine, His Word. They say, “I believe in healing”, but don’t actually take the medicine that will produce that healing in which they “believe.”
What good would it do if you “believe” in food, but didn’t actually eat any? You would starve!
What good would it do to “believe” in water if you don’t actually drink any? You would die of thirst!
God’s Word is His medicine. There are several important parallels between God’s medicine and natural medicine.
GOD’S WORD HAS THE POWER TO HEAL
God’s Word is a healing agent, just as natural medicine is also a healing agent or catalyst. In other words, the medicine itself contains the capacity to produce healing. God’s Word contains within itself the potential, the energy, and the ability, to produce healing in your body.
Psalm 107:20 says,”He sent His Word and healed them and delivered them from their destructions.”
Isaiah 55:10,11 says that the Word of God will accomplish what it was sent out to do.
The Word of God contains, within itself, the power to produce what it says, just as when God said, “Let there be light”, and there was light!
That same creative, miracle-producing power fills every Word that God speaks.
Psalm 107:20, The Passion Translation:
“God spoke the words, ‘Be healed’! And we were healed, delivered from death’s door!”
Healing scriptures contain within themselves the ability to produce healing.
Hebrew 4:12 says, the word of God is living and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword…
“God’s message is full of life and power.”(Weymouth Translation)
:God’s Word is alive with energy.” (Jordan Translation)
For the Word that God speaks is alive and full of power, making it active, operative , energizing, and effective. (Amplified Bible, Classic Edition)
The key to receiving the life and healing energy inherent in the Word of God is to feed on it until it penetrates your spirit, where it deposits that life and healing energy within you.
GOD’S WORD WILL WORK IF WE USE IT
Both the spiritual medicine of God’s Word and natural medicine will work for anyone who takes them. It is not a matter of God willing or not willing to heal of any individual. It is simply a matter of any individual choosing to take the medicine that will bring healing to his or her body.
WE MUST FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS
Most importantly, medicine must be taken according to its directions in order for it to be effective.
Some medications are to be taken internally; others are to be used externally. To rub a medication on your body externally when the directions say to take it internally will never work. To take the medicine after meals when the directions say to take it before meals will reduce its effectiveness. To take it once in a while when the directions say to take it three times daily will
mean limited results, if any.
It’s the same with God’s medicine. It must be taken according to directions to work. The directions for taking God’s medicine are found in Proverbs 4:20-23. Let’s read it again:
“My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; For they are life to those who find them, and health (medicine) to all their flesh. Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.”
We might say that attending to His Word, inclining our ears to His Word, and keeping His Word before our eyes will cause His Word to get into the midst of our hearts. It is only as the Word gets into the midst of our hearts and stays there that it releases its healing life and power within us.
Head-knowledge won’t be enough. We are going to have to allow the Word of God to take root deep within us through hearing it, meditating on it, attending to it, pondering it, and muttering it to ourselves. It is only then that the Word of God will penetrate all the way down into our hearts, and release healing power in our bodies.
HAVE FAITH AND BE PATIENT
God’s way of healing is spiritual and requires both faith and patience. Life and healing energy is released first in our spirit, then distributed to our body. God’s medicine must be taken internally. Instead of wondering whether we have enough faith to be healed, we need to simply take the medicine! That’s our act of faith! We are declaring by our actions in taking God’s medicine diligently, that we believe the Word will bring healing to us.
Do this: Make a list of healing scriptures and internalize them several times a day. Repeat them out loud, to yourself over and over again. The medicine of God’s Word will work, if we get it inside of us.
Remember that it takes time for natural medicine to work. People invest a lot of time, patience, and money in the prescriptions written by their doctors. They refill their prescriptions over and over. They are faithful to take their medicine according to the directions. They don’t just take one dose and expect an instant cure.
It’s the same with God’s Word. Keep on taking God’s medicine! Give it time to work! Be faithful! Say those healing scriptures over and over to yourself!
Think about what you’re saying! Use the Word of God as a source of praise to your Heavenly Father! His Word is is life and medicine to your flesh! Thank Him for the power of His Word, and for His healing mercy!
We’ll close with the Passion Translation of our foundational scripture, Proverbs 4:20-23:
“Fill your thoughts with my Words until they penetrate deep within your spirit. They will impart true life and radiant health into the very core of your being.”
You are loved! Be healed in Jesus’ name!
